What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopy is a type of surgery that uses smaller cuts than you might expect with the help of Laparoscopic Surgery Instruments.

The process takes its name from the laparoscope, a slender tool with a tiny video camera and a light at the end. When a surgeon inserts it through a small cut and into your body, he can look at a video monitor and see what’s going on inside you.

Without these tools, they should make a much larger opening. With special Laparoscopic Surgery Instruments, your surgeon won’t have to touch your body either. It also means less cutting.

Have you heard about “minimally invasive” surgery? Laparoscopic surgery is a type. Doctors first used it for gallbladder surgery and gynecology operations. Then it came into play for the intestines, liver and other organs.

How It’s Done

Before this system was put in place, the surgeon operating on his patient’s stomach had to make an incision 6 to 12 inches long. It gave them enough space to see what they were doing and achieve everything they had to work on.

In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes several small cuts to insert Laparoscopic Surgery Instruments. Usually, each is no more than half an inch long. They insert a tube into each opening and the camera and surgical instruments pass through it. Then the surgeon does the operation.

Benefits

This has several advantages over traditional surgery. Because it involves less cutting:

You have smaller scars.

You get out of the hospital faster.

You will feel less pain as the scars heal and they heal more quickly.

You return to normal activities earlier.

You may have fewer internal scars.

Here’s an example. With traditional methods, you could spend a week or more in the hospital for intestinal surgery and your total recovery could take 4 to 8 weeks.

If you have laparoscopic surgery, you can only stay 2 nights in the hospital and recover in 2 or 3 weeks. And shorter hospitalization is usually less expensive.

Advanced Types Of Laparoscopic Surgery

During certain operations, the surgeon can place the camera and surgical tool through the same opening in the skin. That means fewer scars. But it is more complicated for the surgeon because the instruments are very close together.

In other cases, the surgeon may decide to use a device that allows him to approach the hands. This is called “hand-assisted” laparoscopy.

The cut in the skin should be longer than half an inch, but it can still be smaller than in traditional surgery. This allowed the use of laparoscopic surgery for the liver and other organs.

When A Robot Helps

Technology can help the medical team be precise. In the robotic version of laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon first cuts the skin and inserts the camera, as usual. Instead of grabbing the surgical instruments, they installed the mechanical arms of a robot. Then they move to a nearby computer.

Many surgeons believe that robotic surgery is particularly useful for interventions on people who weigh heavily, as well as for gynecological and urological surgeries. Most prostate sampling operations use robots.

With robotic surgery, the monitor gives the surgeon a high-resolution, 3-dimensional image inside the body. While they are looking at the screen, they use manual controls to operate the robot and surgical instruments.

This allows the surgeon to be more accurate, which means less impact on the body and less bleeding. You may also have less discomfort after the operation.
